Welcome to our "Wall-Less" Rescue!
The Rescue Team
Our Mission...
Updated Sept 4th, 2009

ACAR has been operating as a No-Kill "Wall-less" Rescue for over 7 years.
Using only foster homes and unceasing hard work by our volunteers and board members, we rescue and place more animals than we did as a physical shelter, while the animals are cared for in homes instead of in cages. We are proud to have continued serving our area for 30 years. Despite our efforts, the homeless animal situation has only marginally improved - the only effective solution is spaying and neutering pets. We can't build enough no-kill shelters to house them all, any more than you can stop a leaky roof by putting out more pails. The sad fact is that there are more cats and dogs than there are loving homes. We urge you to support organizations like ACAR which actively spay and neuter companion animals.

Found Kitty
A Very Happy Return...
This ten-year-old black and white kitty went out one day in May in downtown North Berwick as was his usual practice. As the day progressed, his family became concerned that kitty had not returned to sit in the sunny window for the bulk of the day as he always had. Days went by, turning into weeks, turning into months with no sign of their missing furry family member. As hard as it was to think about, kitty was not only MIA but was now presumed dead.
In the beginning of August a resident of Oak Woods Road called Another Chance Animal Rescue to ask for a placement for a cat that had been hanging around his family home all summer. The cat was great with kids, but the grand kids were heading home and no, he did not want a cat so please take in the stray. We did...
Kitty was not showing well at the adoption center where he was enclosed in a large cage for viewing and possibly a new family, so he was allowed to roam free in the adoption center which is not at all our policy. (People stand with the doors opened for extended periods of time making it easy for a loose pet to head South in a minute.)
Well as it worked out a gal who stops by the thrift store often came in to do some shopping, and just happen to see the loose cat. There was a second of shouts and excitement before our volunteers realized that the loose cat was the missing since May kitty. The shopper ran from the center to collect a photo and her husband, (pictured) and was back before the door had a chance to close.
We need to share this wonderful outcome with the readers, particularly those who have lost a pet to the outside world. There is always hope. Some stories do end well.
The family has updated the kitty's story, saying he has No desire to venture out of doors, has super glued himself to his people and plans to stay in from now on.

Please have your pets Spay/Neutered!
Many kittens, puppies, rabbits, cats & dogs are put to death because there simply are not enough homes available. As a NO Kill organization, we find this unacceptable! The solution is so simple-spay or neuter your pet. Spaying and neutering will help make your dog or cat a healthier, happier pet. Low Cost Spay Neuter Certificates are available through The Friends of Animals, 1-800-321 PETS.
The Spay ME Program
To qualify for the program, pet owners must be eligible to participate in at least one of several government programs: food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability or Medicaid. Eligible applicants must also provide a $10 co-payment for cats and a $20 co-payment for dogs.
Starting this year, Mainers can check a box on income tax forms to contribute to the fund. For more information, call the "Help Fix ME" toll-free number: (800) 367-1317 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
