"...Because Every Animal Deserves Another Chance!"
Welcome to our "Wall-Less" Rescue!
The Rescue Team
Our Mission...
Updated May 13, 2009

ACAR has been operating as a No-Kill "Wall-less" Rescue for over 6 years.
Using only foster homes and unceasing hard work by our volunteers and board members, we rescue and place more animals than we did as a physical shelter, while the animals are cared for in homes instead of in cages. We are proud to have continued serving our area for 30 years. Despite our efforts, the homeless animal situation has only marginally improved - the only effective solution is spaying and neutering pets. We can't build enough no-kill shelters to house them all, any more than you can stop a leaky roof by putting out more pails. The sad fact is that there are more cats and dogs than there are loving homes. We urge you to support organizations like ACAR which actively spay and neuter companion animals.

Meet Molly, a very inspiring generous youth...
Molly Jacques, age 8, is a 3rd grader in Mrs. Caler's class at North Berwick Primary School. Molly the daughter of Kim & Mike Jacques of North Berwick has 3 rescue pets of her own - a dog & 2 cats. Molly decided to ask her family to donate money, in lieu of Christmas gifts, towards the purchase of pet food, toys, treats, gift cards, etc for Another Chance of North Berwick. She also asked her classmates to participate and they collected pet food to add to the donation.
Another Chance Animal Rescue would very much like to thank Molly, her parents and the many children in Mrs. Caler's class for their generosity. Many of our furry little clients are currently benefiting from your gifts to them.
We are truly lucky to have such a dedicated young lady in our community.

Students at the Mary Hurd Elementary School in North Berwick...
held a surprise Christmas party to benefit the furry clients of Another Chance Animal Rescue in North Berwick. The children gathered pet foods, snacks, toys and money providing a wonderful Christmas for the homeless animals in ACAR'S care. We know that Holidays are a time of sharing, a time for caring about your neighbors, family and friends. This message was not lost on these giving caring young leaders of tomorrow. While many of us were rushing along trying to get everything completed for the holidays, these youngsters truly captured the real spirit of the season by taking time to help needy animals. The furry clients and all the folks of Another Chance Animal Rescue would like to express our most sincere gratitude to the entire student body, parents, teachers, support staff and the administration who all assisted in this selfless act of kindness to some very special companion animals that can only express their love with instant purring and tail wagging. Thank you so much for caring.

Meet Nick Arau and Jonathan the lion hearted kitten...Jonathan's story has been aired the last couple of weeks as our really special needs kitten that lost his leg to a terrible injury. Nick an eighth grader at York Middle School in York, Maine read Jonathan's story in the Sentinel and decided to put together a medical fund-raiser to assist with Jonathan's vet bills. Nick made posters up explaining Jonathan's case and got mom, (Molly Arau) to hang the posters at her work place, collecting from many wonderful giving co-workers. Nick himself donated one quarter of the overall donation generated, by giving up his allowance that he had been saving for a special project that he had going long before he saw Jonathan's story.

Nick has taken the extraordinary extra step of going to his school principal and asking if there something that Nick's classmates could do to further assist with kitten Jonathan's medical needs. We are so pleased to report that York Middle School's principal will allow the student to donate 25% of their proceeds from the school dance in the name of Jonathan.

Jonathan and Another Chance Animal Rescue would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Nick Arau, mom, Molly Arau, and the many, many people that assist Nick is his selfless act of kindness to a very special little fur ball that can only express his love with instant purring. The world needs more loving caring young people like Nick Arau.

Update 12/9/08: Jonathan would like all to know that he has been adopted and will be spending the holidays with his new family in his new home! He would like to thank all who have called, emailed, prayed and donated to help him out. We will keep you updated on him as we get news from his new family.

Meet Queen…
Queen is a very beautiful, very exotic Tortoiseshell Lynx point Persian female cat adult, spayed, up to date on all necessary vaccinations, wormed, de flead, and has had her wellness checkup. There are three Persians that will be available for adoption on Saturday, but the others are black and very difficult to photograph. Persians are deluxe furry cats that come in various colors. All Persians are highly intelligence, sweet and loving making them wonderful family pets. If you have always wanted a sweet loving exotic kitty for yourself or as a family pet, stop by the adoption center on Saturday to chat with one of our cat coordinators and meet this group of exotic beauties. Adoption hours on Saturday are 10:00 a.m. ~ 2:00 p.m. at the adoption center located @ 37 Market Street in North Berwick. There will also be a variety of other cats and teenage kittens available for your consideration.

Tuffy...
As I write this I am waiting for a call from Post Road Vets. I have just returned from a rescue with a battered feline that I trapped that desperately needs our help. Hopefully he is not to far gone and with much TLC, we can save him. We spend thousands of dollars every year saving cats & dogs very much in need of medical services. We thank our generous donors for their continued support, without which, the suffering would continue.
Tuffy has a huge head, a "sack of bones" of a body, blood filled ticks hanging off of him, ears full of mites, hair falling out in clumps and big sad half closed eyes.
Update: Sadly Tuffy had to be euthanized. He was in the last stages of Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
It is a sad, harsh life that "Tuffy's" live. We hope that next time a stray pet in your neighborhood comes to visit that you will do the right thing for him/her. Contact your local Animal Control or Animal Rescue/Shelter. Please don't let their suffering continue.

Please have your pets Spay/Neutered!
Many kittens, puppies, rabbits, cats & dogs are put to death because there simply are not enough homes available. As a NO Kill organization, we find this unacceptable! The solution is so simple-spay or neuter your pet. Spaying and neutering will help make your dog or cat a healthier, happier pet. Low Cost Spay Neuter Certificates are available through The Friends of Animals, 1-800-321 PETS.
The Spay ME Program
To qualify for the program, pet owners must be eligible to participate in at least one of several government programs: food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability or Medicaid. Eligible applicants must also provide a $10 co-payment for cats and a $20 co-payment for dogs.
Starting this year, Mainers can check a box on income tax forms to contribute to the fund. For more information, call the "Help Fix ME" toll-free number: (800) 367-1317 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
